Today the weather lady is predicting temps will hit 90 degrees in Boston, 80 degrees here on Cape Cod. I have to test the old fans and see if they still run without grinding or making some constant nick.nick.nick sound as they spin in their cages.
I bought a brand new air conditioner a couple of years ago. The description on the box promised “Quiet, easy air flow. Sleep like a baby!” Of course the hype was just that: hype. I put it in the window of My bedroom, shut the windows and turned it on. Grrrrrrrrrriiiiiiinnnnd…..HUUUUUUUMMMMM. Too noisy for me to sleep. So I turned it off. With the windows still shut it took no time for the heat in the room to return. All night long I danced between the air conditioner on, windows closed, air conditioner off, windows open. I think I finally fell asleep at 5 in the morning.
I took the machine out of the window and have never used it again. It would be good to use in a room for a dog or a cat. Not meant for human use.
What about you? Got central air? Want a visitor for the summer?
Remember when we were kids and we had no A/C? We were like pioneers, dealt with hard times, at the whim of Mother Nature, walked all those miles to school, etc., etc.
Seriously, though, we have central air and you’re welcome to a room of your own -for your room and board we can barter lessons in photoshop…. (Catch is, we live over the bridge!)
Or, as a home improvement project, you could insulate your bedroom walls with special cold-retaining sheet rock (sold at Lowe’s), leave your A/C on during the day when you’re at work, and by the time you’re ready for bed – voila – Arctic conditions.
Actually, if you listen to relaxing music on your iPod, it might drown out the hum of the A/C…. 🙂
Foam ear plugs … The best invention ever… I actually carry them inmy purse! Cheap and efficient solution!
Think cool thoughts and put ice in those drinks!
